Air-Abrasion Dentistry

Air abrasion is a dental technique that may be used as an alternative to traditional dental drilling to remove tooth decay and assist in other dental procedures. The air-abrasion system is mainly used to treat small cavities, and remove plaque and decay without the use of a local anesthetic.

Air abrasion removes decay from teeth through a blast or stream of pellets consisting of a mixture of air, silica and aluminum oxide. The particles of decay on a tooth's surface are removed as it is hit by the stream of pellets and air. The decay is then suctioned away through a thin tube.

Benefits of Air Abrasion Dentistry

Air abrasion has many benefits over traditional drilling methods, including:

  • Little or no need for anesthesia
  • No heat, sound, pressure or vibration
  • Less risk of chipping or fracturing teeth
  • More healthy tissue remaining after the procedure
  • Dry work surface allows optimal placement of fillings

The air-abrasion technique is commonly used to treat small cavities that are close to the surface of the teeth. It is not recommended for use on deeper cavities that are closer to the pulp of the tooth. The air-abrasion technique can also be used to help repair old tooth restorations by accessing difficult areas such as those between the teeth.
